It is great when your vacuum cleaners are working, but when it’s not it’s important to know what makes it work to help identify what needs to be repaired. Learn about all your machines parts below.

Motor

The vacuum motor is the not only heaviest part of your vacuum, but it is the primary source of its operation. The motor is attached to a fan where air is forced over to drive out the exhaust. Motors offer different suction and cleaning levels depending on the strength of your vacuum’s motor. Your cleaning power is determined by the vacuum's power. This power is measured in watts and has amp ratings that determine the amount of electrical current used while operating. You should select a high wattage and high amp when cleaning larger very dirty areas. And the wattage and amp can go down based on simpler cleaning needs.

Internal Fan

The internal fan is located behind the rotating brushes and works in conjunction with them to move the dirt into the system. The fan brings the dirt and debris into the filter and deposits it in the dust bag.

Filter

A vacuum filter core function is for separating heavy, solid objects from dust. It is important to separate out large objects from entering the areas of the vacuum that can be easily broken. That is why it is so important to have a good filter. Large objects can easily break fan blades or cause holes in your dust bag. The filter acts as your vacuum’s protective shield. There are 2 types of filters to choose from: Post-Motor or HEPA.

Post-Motor Filter

This type of filter helps stop particles from entering the air after being sucked up by your vacuum. Having a post–motor filter allows the release of only clean air from the exhaust.

Hepa Filter

The HEPA filter traps dust microns and pollen to prevent them from being forced back into the air. This filter captures almost 99.9% of particles which help those that suffer from allergies.

Power Source

There are 2 types of power sources for your vacuum; rechargeable battery or AC power cord that plugs into the wall. Without a power source your vacuum will never turn on. The advantage to a battery-operated vacuum is the lightweight portability of the unit. However, for bigger jobs, you may want to choose a vacuum with a continual source of power from a dedicated wall plug-in to avoid draining the battery before you are finished cleaning.
